Most of us have been in a situation before that required us to bring some formal clothing along to change into whether we were traveling to a family member’s wedding or taking a luxury cruise. However, if you haven’t been in this situation before, don’t worry…one of these days you will. For those of us who have traveled with formal clothing before, we know how hard it can be to transport these clothes as they can’t just be packed and shoved into a suitcase. Below are a few tips you may find handy the next time you have to bring your “Sunday best” with you.
1. Invest in a High-Quality Garment Bag. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that they can just keep their clothes on the hanger and hang them (exposed) from the little look above the back seat passenger doors. While this is idea will work for small trips (an hour or less), when you’re going on a long trip, you need to have a high-quality garment bag for your formal wear. These bags will protect your clothing from dirt and other damaging particles they may come in contact with.
2. A Trash Bag is Better than Nothing. If you don’t have time or the money available to go and purchase a high-quality garment bag, then trash bags will work too. Obviously, they aren’t as durable, but they are better than having nothing. For long dresses, simply put one trash bag over the top of the gown and then take another bag and bring it up from the bottom to overlap the first bag. Then fasten the two sections together with tape and you’ve got a self-made garment bag.
3. Bring an Iron and Small Ironing Board if Possible. If you are going to be staying in a hotel but aren’t sure if they provide an iron, make sure to bring your own. They also make small travel-size ironing boards that can easily be used sitting on a dresser or a bed. This will eliminate the constant worry of whether or not your clothes will arrive unwrinkled.
