I’m sure most of you are familiar with the Facebook movement “30 Days of Thanksgiving” where everyone shares one thing they are thankful for each day throughout the month of November. While we should be thankful for all the blessings in our lives each and every day, I think it’s a great idea to share with our family and friends on Facebook (and elsewhere) the things that we are thankful for during this time of year. And, the Facebook movement is a fun way to do it.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season and forget about the things that truly matter. While it sounds a little silly to say this, the truth is that we honestly have to make ourselves take a moment to think about the blessings in our lives or we will continue to “skate” through life without really appreciating them.
With some of the events that have happened to my family in the last few months, I have given this a lot of thought. Below are some of the blessings I have in my life to be thankful for. I’m sure a lot of you can relate and even add some of your own to the list!
- My Husband – My husband and I met when we were in grade school and in high school he made it clear that he liked me. The truth was that I didn’t like him at all and the only reason I went out with him the first time was because I had just broken up with my long-time boyfriend and didn’t want to be sitting at home that weekend. (I know, horrible of me.) I had no idea that we were actually meant for each other and would build a life together. And, none of this would have happened if he had listened to me and left me alone all those years ago. I’m incredibly thankful for my husband and all he does for me, his kids and his extended family and friends.
- My Children – While I often admit that my kids drive me nuts, I do love them dearly. I believe that children are a gift from God and it’s a true blessing to have them. There are so many people out there who want children but are unable to have them…and there are many more out there who have had children but lost them in one way or another. This holiday season, I am making it a point to remind myself every day how blessed I am to have the children I have. And, I’m going to let them know it to…we never know when our time is up.
- My Circumstances – We are all consumed by the day-to-day problems that are “constants” in our lives, but all it takes for me to appreciate my personal life circumstances is turning on the evening news. There are so many people out there who have it worse than I do. When it comes down to it, what do I really have to complain about? My husband and I are able to provide food, shelter and clothing for our family and our house is filled with love for one another. Isn’t that all that really matters?
Above are the top three things that I am thankful for this holiday season. Now, I challenge you to take the time to think about one thing that you are thankful every day. It doesn’t matter if you post it to your Facebook page or not, just take time out every day this month to recognize the blessings in your life.
So, what’s one thing that you are thankful for right now?
