Black Tie Event: When an invitation says it’s a “Black Tie Event,” that means that the event requires the utmost formality. For example, men and boys will need to wear a full tuxedo. Women and girls will need to wear a long, formal dress also known as a cocktail dress. Formal Event: Generally, a “Formal Event” is considered to be the same as a “Black Tie Event.” However, it may also be acceptable for men and boys to wear a suit with a nice shirt and no tie. It really depends on the nature of the event. If in doubt, it’s always best to contact the event’s host or hostess.
