With all the holiday festivities, we know that each one will require a different type of formal attire – and when you have little ones, it can be difficult to make sure they are dressed appropriately. We want to help you with this issue and the first step is to understand the different terms regarding the required dress.

Black Tie Event: When an invitation says it’s a “Black Tie Event,” that means that the event requires the utmost formality. For example, men and boys will need to wear a full tuxedo. Women and girls will need to wear a long, formal dress also known as a cocktail dress. Formal Event: Generally, a “Formal Event” is considered to be the same as a “Black Tie Event.” However, it may also be acceptable for men and boys to wear a suit with a nice shirt and no tie. It really depends on the nature of the event. If in doubt, it’s always best to contact the event’s host or hostess. Semi-Formal and Casual Events: A “Semi-Formal Event” or “Casual Event” are both the same type of events, as far as the attire goes. Boys should wear nice suits to these events and girls should wear short and stylish dresses. Generally, dark suits are best, but depending on the time of year and where the event is being held, a light suit may be more appropriate.
