Thanksgiving and the Kids

For the majority of adults who are planning a Thanksgiving Day meal and expecting a large group of people to join them, things can get a little stressful in the days leading up to “turkey day.” However, if you have children, it’s important that you remember to include them in on the action, even though you’re a little stressed.

A lot of people get wrapped up with preparing the food for Thanksgiving and forget what the holiday is really about. It’s not about the food. Instead, it’s about taking time to celebrate everything you have to be thankful for. One of the ways we do this is by spending the day with our friends and family. However, for young children who kind of get tossed aside while everyone is in a frenzy in the kitchen, the holiday may appear to just be about the food…and a couple of no school days.

So, this year why not do things just a little different and include your children in the preparation? Most kids love to be included to feel like they are contributing in some way. And, if you include them and allow them to help with some of the baking (you can bake pies together the night before if it’s too crazy on Thanksgiving) then you will be creating Thanksgiving Day memories with your kids that focus on the true meaning of the holiday.

And, the Facebook movement is a fun way to do it.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season and forget about the things that truly matter. While it sounds a little silly to say this, the truth is that we honestly have to make ourselves take a moment to think about the blessings in our lives or we will continue to “skate” through life without really appreciating them.

With some of the events that have happened to my family in the last few months, I have given this a lot of thought. Below are some of the blessings I have in my life to be thankful for. I’m sure a lot of you can relate and even add some of your own to the list!

My Husband – My husband and I met when we were in grade school and in high school he made it clear that he liked me. The truth was that I didn’t like him at all and the only reason I went out with him the first time was because I had just broken up with my long-time boyfriend and didn’t want to be sitting at home that weekend. (I know, horrible of me.) I had no idea that we were actually meant for each other and would build a…
